Saga Dawa Festival Tour
Saga Dawa Festival is pragmatic by Tibetan Buddhist as one of the important festivals in their society. The Saga Dawa festival has been celebrated by the Tibetan Buddhists for past thousand years or so. Saga Dawa Festival on April 15 marks the birth, transcendence and death of Sakyamuni. Pilgrims and secular folks will visit Lhasa and the festival is observed by turning prayer wheels, having vegetarian lunch and a picnic by the Dragon King Pond. The most important festival for Tibetan Buddhism, the 'Saga Dawa Festival' commemorates Shakyamuni's Buddhahood and the death of his mortal body.
Saga Dawa Festival usually takes place at Tanboche. This Saga Dawa festival is the most important festival of Mt Kailash, celebrating the enlightenment of Buddha and takes place every year at full moon of the fourth lunar month. The Saga Dawa Festival is observed by Tibetan Buddhist as one of the important festival in Thus it has occupied an important position in the Tibetan society held each year on the full moon day of the fourth lunar month of the Tibetan calendar. The Saga Dawa festival is celebrated in admiration of Shakyamuni’s and his illumination. In this Saga Dawa festival, a giant flagpole is ritually taken down and the prayer flags are changed for new ones. After the flagpole is upright again, the Tibetans try to tell the future by watching its position; if the pole is erected straight it will mean happiness for all of Tibet.
This Saga Dawa Festival Tour is not only to see the pristine beauty of the region but also to experience highly colourful festival at the holiest Mt. Kailash Parbat and Manasarovar.
Itinerary |
- Day 01: (19th May 2010) Your arrival at Tribhuwan International Airport and transfer to hotel. O/N at hotel.
- Day 02: City tour including Pashupatinath temple, Boudhanath, Swayambhunath & Kathmandu Durbar Square. O/N at hotel.
- Day 03: Drive from Katmandu to Zhangmu - Nyalam (7-8 hours drive, Total distance: 125 k.m)
After having your breakfast you will drive from Kathmandu to Nepal/China Friendship Bridge (Kodari) where our Tibetan guide and driver will be waiting for you, you will then drive to Nyalam, which is situated at 3750m. On the way, you will see a variety of landscapes and mountains. Overnight at Guesthouse,
- Day 04: Nyalam Rest day. Explore around Nyalam for acclimatization.
Overnight at Guesthouse, inclusive of full board meal, this is prepared by our Nepalese staff.
- Day 05: Drive to Saga (4200m) 232km / 8 hrs. Over Night at Guesthouse / Camp
The road climbs up to the La Lung (5124m) then drops down before heading western part of Tibet . Road to east goes to Lhasa , capital city of Tibet . The driving is difficult, but the stunning views of the Himalayas and in particular Shisha Pangma (8012m) more than make up for the rough travel. By late afternoon we will cross the Bhramaputra River and a quick drive will bring us to Saga. Overnight at Saga.
- Day 06: Drive to Paryang (4500m) 285 km / 8 hrs. Over Night at Guesthouse / Camp
O ur jeeps and trucks roll through the gigantic valleys following the various rivers through the grazing lands of yaks and sheep. The landscape is highlighted by snow capped peaks rising out of the distant sand dunes. Depending on the season, many Tibetan nomads and traders in traditional dress inhabit this area.
- Day 07: Drive to Lake Manasarovar (4400m) 298km / 9 hrs. Over Night at Camp
T his is the longest driving day of the trip. By late afternoon the drive through the green pastures and huge valleys gives way to the first sighting of Mt Kailash and Lake Manasarovar . We will drive to Thogu, holiest bathing gate of Manas.
- Day 08: Drive to Tarchen (4600m) 60km Over Night at Guesthouse
Lake Manasarovar (4500m) is regarded as the most holy of all of Tibet 's many lakes. According to Hindu and Buddhist cosmology the four great rivers of the Indian sub-continent, the Brahmaputra, Sutlej, Ganges, and Indus all arise from the lake. It is said that Lord Vishnu floated in it for an eternity, dreaming, until the life force stirred, and out of the water's infinite potential sprang forth all of creation. This day offers a wonderful opportunity to see the great lake Manasarover with Mt. Gurula Mandhata (7728m) on south and Holy Kailash on the north. After bath and Puja drive to Tarchen via Chiu monastery and hot spring.
- Day 09: (27th May 2010): Visit Saga Dawa festival .Interested trekkers may arrange with the jeep driver and visit Ashtapad, to get a closer view of Mt. Kailash and also to Thirthapuri.
- Day 10: Drive to Tarboche (5 km) trek to Derapuk (4800m) Over Night at Camp
Our first day of trekking around Kailash begins at Tarpuche. As we make our way along the route we pass numerous chortens as well as the sky burial site of the 84 Mahasiddas. We will also have wonderful views of cascading creeks, streaming water falls and the mighty west face of Kailash. We will pass the Chukku Gompa and 5 hrs later arrive at the Dirapuk Gompa where we will set up camp for the night. Total hiking for the day will be 15 km 7 hrs
- Day 11: Trek to Zutulpuk Gompa (4790m) Over Night at Camp
The hardest but holiest day of the pilgrimage. We will cross through a rocky expanse dotted with stone cairns draped with the clothes offered by pilgrims as a spiritual sign of death. Gaurikunda is one of the holiest sites to view/ visit from the top. Further hiking brings us to the accent up to Dolma -La pass (5630m). After a nice break at the top of the pass, we will head down the steep trail to our eventual campsite at Zutul-Puk Monastery (the cave of miracles
- Day 12: Trek to end of valley: Drive to Tarchen on the last day of your Kailash parikrama, a three-hour walk brings us to where the river emerges onto the Borkha plain. Our jeeps will be waiting to transport us to our camp at Lake Mansarovar .
- Day 13: Drive to Dongba , 345 km/10 hours of driving . Overnight at tented camp, inclusive of full board meal.
- Day 14: Drive to Nyalam , Overnight at tented camp, inclusive of full board meal.
- Day 15: Drive from Zhangmu to Katmandu
Upon arrival at Kodari (Friendship highway); you will exit from Tibet boarder saying goodbye to Tibetan guide and driver, where one of our staffs with Nepali driver will be waiting for you. After finishing Immigration formalities in Nepal immigration, you will continue drive to Kathmandu . Overnight at hotel, inclusive of breakfast.
- Day 16: Drive to Airport for your onward journey. Farewell (04th June 2010)

Transportation
We use the best 4WD Land cruisers (Toyota 4500) for the overland drive across the Tibetan highland. These vehicles are extremely sturdy, spacious and reliable and they make the journey as comfortable as possible.
A Typical Day – Overland Drive
After breakfast, normally begins your our day's drive at about 9am. We'll drive for several hours, stopping along the way for photographs or places of special interest, before stopping for lunch at around noontime. After lunch we continue our journey, generally arriving at our destination by 3 or 4pm.
Communication
Communication facilities in Tibet have been improved over the past few years. All the hotels we use in Lhasa, Gyantse and Shigatse have international IDD phone and fax services. Phone calls can also be made from public booth in bigger towns. Internet cafes are also available at bigger towns, check with your guide for the best cyber cafes in each town.
Temprature & Clothing
Tibet will have its average temperature between 5-25 degree Celsius in the month of April through Nov. During trekking season, the night temperature in the mountain often falls below freezing. Therefore, you are required to have adequate warm clothes to save from extreme cold. Further, it will be better to dress in layers that can be easily put on & off as required. It is often advisable to carry raincoat because snow or rain can also occur sometimes. So, we highly recommendation to visit in Tibet is from April to November and for treks and Mt. Kailash tour from April to the beginning of October.

Health
It is necessary to be physically fit & healthy for the participate on Tibet tour. We suggest you to consult your doctor at least 2 months prior to your trip regarding the main health consideration in high altitude sickness. In addition, those who are sufferer of high blood pressure, heart problem or diabetic are not recommending for the Tibet overland tour.

Please ensure that you have yourself and your belongings adequately insured before your departure. Insurance is compulsory for all our trips.
