Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve

Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is situated on the flood plains of the Sapta-Koshi River of Eastern Nepal, which is a wetland of international importance. In 1987, it was declared a Ramsar site. Tall khar-pater grassland with a few patches of Khair-sissoo scrub forest and deciduous mixed river line jungle is home to more than 280 bird species including 20 duck species, 2 species of ibises, many storks, egrets and herons. The endangered swamp partridge and Bengal florican are found here. The Koshi Barge is an extremely important resting-place for migratory birds.

The last surviving population of wild buffalo or arna is found here. The reserve is also home to many types of mammals such as hog deer, spotted deer, wild boar and blue bull. The endangered Gharial crocodile and Gangetic dolphin have been recorded in the Koshi River. The vegetation mainly includes tall khar-pater grasslands with a few patches of khair-sissoo scrub forest and deciduous mixed riverine forest.During the monsoon, the reserve is flooded with depths ranging from 10 to 300 cm. From season to season the Sapta-Koshi River changes its course.

You can explore the forest of Koshi Tappu safari riding on elephant back. Here you will see the hattisar (elephant stable) where elephant breed regularly and which is one of few such facilities in Asia. During the Koshi Tappu Safari at dusk and dawn, you will see many varieties of birds and animals sitting along the Saptakoshi river.

Getting there:
 There is a daily domestic flight to Nepalgunj from Kathmandu Airport. This national Park can be reached by surface route only. So after reaching Nepalgunj, Public bus services wait us to the far west Terai.

When to visit:
The best seasons to visit the park are fall (October - November) and spring (mid February - April).

What to see:
Vegetation: The Park contains 70% of shorea Robusta and the remaining 30% is covered with the balance mixture of grasslands and reverie woods.
Animals: The wild Boar, Hog Deer, Blue Bull, Porcupine, sloth bear, wild dog, Mongoose, civets, jungle cats, Rhesus Monkey, Barking Deer, Sambar Deer Otter, Jackal, Hyena, Common Leopard. Fishing cat, Languor Monkey etc. are commonly seen.
Birds: The Woodpecker (10 species), Heron (5 species), Bulbul (5 species), Dove (5 species), Egret (4 species), Parakeets, King fisher, Bee Eater, Barbet, Pigeion, Stork, Sunbird, Babbler, Warble, flycatcher and Bar-headed Goose are seen in this park.
