Bhutan Travel Information

Bhutan, the land of the peaceful thunder dragon is known to the world by several names such as the 'the Last Shangri-La' or 'the Last Place on the Roof of the World.' Though the original name from the time of Marco Polo was 'Bootan,' the natives prefer to call their country 'Druk Yul,' or the Land of the Peaceful Thunder Dragon. Nestled in the lap of the Himalayas, Bhutan offers spectacular mountain views, immense scenic beauty and a unique culture and lifestyle.

Bhutan is a sanctuary of magnificent scenery in the heart of Himalayas. Bhutan, the unusual, unique, and exotic Himalayan Kingdom which is identified as absorbing, mystifying, and captivating by travellers still remains untouched by modern civilization due to it's isolation from the outside world for centuries. The uniquely vibrant culture, the dramatic geography, and the mystic aura makes Bhutan one of the most magical and appealing countries in the world as a travel destination. Its ancient cultures, deep-rooted traditions, absorbing history, natural beauty, wondrous architecture, awe-inspiring palaces and forts add new dimensions to the pleasures of travel and vacation. The sights, both natural and man-made are beautiful and unforgettable. The Taktsang "Tiger's Nest" in Paro, Beautiful Punakha Dzong and Memorial Stupa in Thimphu with exquisite sculptures and carvings are considered works of art and masterpieces.

Bhutan is a landlocked mountainous Kingdom, bordered by Tibet, China, and India and has very close cultural ties with Nepal. Though it is small in size, the kingdom's topography is one of dramatic contrasts. The capital city is Thimpu which is unlike any other capital in the world. The traditional architecture of its houses and buildings is particularly striking. The country has a strong sense of traditionalism and this is reflected in the dress and architecture of Bhutan. The country as a whole is like a folk heritage museum displaying typical Bhutanese way of life that has remained unchanged over the years while the rest of the world has dramatically progressed.

Few are permitted access into the land of the living dragon that consciously preserves its unique way of life. It welcomes authentic seekers for whom the chaos of urban life has become a distant memory, and who now revel in bliss of the here and now.
